"1 X 4": 2018 has been the year in which I shot footage every day of me playing (m)usic. For the 1st 5 months, I played by myself, upping the ante in each month to make what I was doing fresh. In June, I recruited 29 other people to play 30 duets with me. After June, I recruited other people on a much more casual basis. I played 4 duets with my friend Dick Turner when he was visiting from Paris for the UNDERAPPRECIATED MOVIEMAKERS FESTIVAL. These turned into a movie called "4 X 2". Around the same time, we played in 3 quartets which became "3 X 4". Before 2018 was out I wanted to record a session of a larger group than had happened previously so I aimed for a quintet or a sextet but, alas, that was not to be. What happened instead was this quartet. Ben Opie & Roger Dannenberg are 2 of my favorite people to play with & long-term collaborators & Coal Hornet is a new friend who's been playing free jazz since 1968. This was his 1st time to play with Roger & Ben so it was a unique moment. For me, the 3 horns make this session a predominantly free jazz one, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but my own contributions, especially on keyboards, pushed it into a different realm in some parts. Since my spinet is out-of-tune, I played an electronic keyboard at the same time as the acoustic one to exploit the microtonal harmonies. I also premiered a new set of samples that I call "How To". Thanks, as always, go to my excellent musician friends, long may they live! - December 24, 2018 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
